Yuki Sato's experience at IH

At IH San Diego, classes are divided into different levels, so you are able to learn in a class that is at the right level for you. Also, the teachers are really nice, so even people with low confidence can have a fun time learning. During class, we did listening, speaking, grammar of course, but also did things like presentations and watched movies. We didn't only learn English though, as we also learned really interesting things about other cultures and countries from our teachers and classmates. After class, we also had set activities where staff would bring us to San Diego tourism spots and to see movies. These activities were the place that we most had the chance to interact with other classmates. If you have some idea of something you'd like to do or go, they will try their best to help you.

With my host family, on days off we would go to the beach, play beach volleyball or go cycling. It was a lot of fun spending free time with them. While I was in San Diego, the 2018 Winter Olympics were going on, and every night I had fun watching the World compete in the Olympic games. Thanks to my homestay family speaking to me a lot, I was able to get a lot of communication practice at home. My host family really appreciated the snacks I brought from Japan, like crackers, chips, and green tea Kit Kats. Also, we would eat dinner at about 6pm every night, do laundry about once a week, and I was able to experience the different parts of American culture firsthand, which was a really good experience.

San Diego is near the ocean, and the city is very beautiful. I personally really liked Coronado Island. The atmosphere there feels very calm, and the town there is particularly beautiful. There are lots of great seafood restaurants and gelato places there as well. My recommendation is to take the ferry from downtown to Coronado. You can see both the City and Coronado island on the water in one amazing view. With the MTS Trolley and Buses, you can get around most anywhere in San Diego which is very convenient. Also, very close to the school is one of the biggest shopping malls in San Diego - The Fashion Valley Mall. The location of the school and San Diego in general is really great.

ここの学校では、レベル別にクラス編成されているので、自分のレベルに合ったクラスで英語を学ぶことができます。また、先生がとても優しく教えてくださるので、英語に自信のない人でも楽しく英語を学ぶことができます。授業では、リスニング、スピーキング、グラマーは勿論、プレゼンテーションや映画を見たりします。英語を学ぶだけでなく、クラスメイトや先生から文化など他国のことについて知ることができ、とても面白かったです。放課後に設けられているアクティビティでは、サンディエゴの観光名所に連れて行ってくださったり、映画を見たりします。アクティビティは違うクラスの人と一番かかわることのできる場面です。自分が行きたいところややりたいことをリクエストすれば、アクティビティで実施できように考えてくださいます。

ホームステイでは、ホストファミリーと休日にビーチに行って、ビーチバレーやサイクリングをし、すごく楽しい時間を過ごすことができました。私が滞在中オリンピックが開催されていて、オリンピック競技は世界共通なので毎晩オリンピックを見て盛り上がりました。ホストファミリーは、たくさん話しかけてくれたおかげでたくさんコミュニケーションをとることができました。私が日本から持っていった歌舞伎揚げせんべいやじゃがりこ、抹茶味のキットカットは、とても喜んで食べてくれました。また、６時くらいに夕飯を食べたり、洗濯は週に１回だったり、日本とは異なるアメリカの生活を体験することができ、いい経験になりました。

サンディエゴのは、海が近くにあり、街がきれいです。私は特にコロナド島がお気に入りです。コロナド島は落ち着いた雰囲気で、街がとにかく綺麗です。おいしいシーフードレストランやジェラート屋さんも多くあります。ダウンタウンとコロナド間はフェリーで移動することもでき、サンディエゴの街とコロナド島を海上で一望できてオススメです。コロナドの砂浜はみたことのないくらい細かい砂で今まで見たビーチの中で一番綺麗でした。MTRのバスやトロリーを使えば、サンディエゴの街なら基本どこにでもいけるのでとても便利です。また、学校の近くにはサンディエゴで１番大きなショッピングモールのファッションバレーもあり、学校の立地もサンディエゴの街もとても良いです。
